• All group members attended the APS March Meeting at the Convention Center in Minneapolis. Dingbin and Chi presented two talks (see Gallery). to the audience within the magnetic and thermal communities, both of which were well received! It was also great time to reconnect with friends!

• Yun and Dr. Wang visited NIST. It was truly exciting to see the "dream place" for experimentalists, setting the golden standards for instrumentation. We had a fantastic time interacting with the brilliant scientists, exchanging ideas, and taking informative lab tours. It was also great catching up with Dingbin who is wrapping up his 6-month internship at NIST (see Gallery). Welcome back to the cold!

• Yun, Momayra, and Dr. Wang attended the IEEE Magnetics Society- Networking Event at the Bell Museum. Yun and Homayra very much enjoyed the conversation with the local magnetic members from industry.
July 2023
• Chi and Xiaotian attended the Summer Heat Transfer Conference in DC. They enjoyed talking to colleagues and friends (both old and newly made) at the conferences. A lot of new ideas generated. Chi delivered a talk based on his joint LSCO paper which was well received!
• Yun presented a poster at the 34th Magnetic Recording Conference (TMRC 2023). It was an excellent opportunity to talk to academic and industrial participants and learn about cutting-edge technology innovations in the current HDD and Spintronics industry!
• Dr. Wang gave an invited talk at the 10th US-JAPAN Joint Seminar on Nanoscale Transport Phenomena in San Diego. She enjoyed the nice views in the Coronado Bay area, a fantastic cruise trip, and catching up with colleagues from both Japan and the US.
• Our magnetic expert, Dingbin, got married in July 2023. MNTTL group members witnessed and celebrated this big life event for him! Dingbin will also be conducting an internship at NIST this fall. Congratulations, and we wish you the best for this next chapter of your life!

• MNTTL received a Seed grant to study Energy Efficient Spintronic Materials. Congratulations!
• MNTTL received a grant from NSF to study thermal transport and magnetization dynamics in Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) materials. This project will be in collaboration with Seagate to advance the HAMR technology. Congrats to all!

Yingying gave a poster presentation on "Thickness-dependent thermal conductivity of single-crystal beta-Ga2O3 thin films". Dr. Wang delivered an invited talk on magnetization dynamics.

• Two papers by Yingying (in collaboration with Prof. Choi's group at PSU) have been published on ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. Both papers talk about beta-gallium oxide based materials as promising building blocks for high-power and high-voltage electronic devices. Congrats, Yingying!!
• Dingbin did a great job for his invited talk at the 32nd Magnetic Recording Conference. He shared his recent study of "Nobel Metal Underlayer Influence on the Temperature Dependent Gilbert Damping in L10 FePd Films with Large Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy", which is a collaborative work between the U of M and NIST.

• Paper by Xuewang, Yingying, and Dingbin, entitled "Thermal Transport in ZnO Nanocrystal Networks Synthesized by Nonthermal Plasmas", is accepted by Physical Review Materials. Congratulations!
• Paper by Dustin and Jie (co-first authors) in collaboration with Prof. J-P Wang and Prof. Randall Victora at ECE has been accepted by Science Advances. This paper explores the possibility of manipulating spin using strain-spin coupling (magnetoacoustic resonance) at ultra-high frequencies (~60 GHz). Congrats!

• MNTTL group welcome REU students Johanna Jernberg and Carlex Morales-Cruz. They will spend the next 10 weeks at MNTTL learning thermal properties of oxides and making 3D printed holders for magnetic measurements.

• Dr. Wang gave an invited talk at the APS March Meeting, entitled “Investigations of Spin Precession in Perpendicular Magnetic Materials Enabled by Time-Resolved Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect”.
• Dr. Wang gave an invited talk at the ASTC meeting in CA to report our group’s efforts on measuring the spin precession of recording media.
• Dr. Wang received the 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award. Accordingly, she gave an invited talk at 3M reporting our group’s efforts on thermal studies of functional materials for energy conversion and harvesting.
