Group news:

Mar 2024

• All group members attended the APS March Meeting at the Convention Center in Minneapolis. Dingbin and Chi presented two talks (see Gallery). to the audience within the magnetic and thermal communities, both of which were well received! It was also great time to reconnect with friends!

• Dr. Wang visited University at Buffalo and delivered a talk there. Thanks for the kind invitation from Prof. Bird.

Jan 2024

• Yun and Dr. Wang visited NIST. It was truly exciting to see the "dream place" for experimentalists, setting the golden standards for instrumentation. We had a fantastic time interacting with the brilliant scientists, exchanging ideas, and taking informative lab tours. It was also great catching up with Dingbin who is wrapping up his 6-month internship at NIST (see Gallery). Welcome back to the cold!

• MNTTL welcomes new member Austin!

• Yun, Momayra, and Dr. Wang attended the IEEE Magnetics Society- Networking Event at the Bell Museum. Yun and Homayra very much enjoyed the conversation with the local magnetic members from industry.  

July 2023

• Chi and Xiaotian attended the Summer Heat Transfer Conference in DC. They enjoyed talking to colleagues and friends (both old and newly made) at the conferences. A lot of new ideas generated. Chi delivered a talk based on his joint LSCO paper which was well received!   

• Yun presented a poster at the 34th Magnetic Recording Conference (TMRC 2023). It was an excellent opportunity to talk to academic and industrial participants and learn about cutting-edge technology innovations in the current HDD and Spintronics industry! 

• Dr. Wang gave an invited talk at the 10th US-JAPAN Joint Seminar on Nanoscale Transport Phenomena in San Diego. She enjoyed the nice views in the Coronado Bay area, a fantastic cruise trip, and catching up with colleagues from both Japan and the US. 

• Our magnetic expert, Dingbin, got married in July 2023. MNTTL group members witnessed and celebrated this big life event for him! Dingbin will also be conducting an internship at NIST this fall. Congratulations, and we wish you the best for this next chapter of your life!

June 2023

• Paper led by Dingbin and Yun on exploring the magnetization dynamics in perpendicular synthetic antiferromagnets (p-SAFs) has been accepted by Physical Review B! Congratulations!  

• Paper led by Chi and Xiaotian on thermal transport in perovskite SrSnO3 has been accepted by Applied Physics Letters, congrats!

April 2023

• Paper led by Yingying and Chi on tuning the thermal conductivity of LSCO under electrolyte gating has been accepted by Nature Communications!! Big congrats!

DB magnetic conference

• Dingbin delivered a talk, entitled "Magnetization Dynamics in Synthetic Antiferromagnets (SAFs) with Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy (PMA)", at the Frontiers in Magnetism: Quantum Technologies Conference in Orlando, FL on Apr. 19, 2023, supported by the DDF Conference Grant. He enjoyed inspiring talks and the nice weather there.

• Yun and Xiaotian passed the PhD qualifying exams. Congrats!

• Dingbin did a great job presenting his work on the dynamics of SAF structures at the 38th Annual MINT Research Review Meeting!

• Dingbin's paper on "Temperature-dependent perpendicular anisotropy and Gilbert damping of L10-FePd films: Role of noble-metal buffer layers" has been accepted by Physical Review Materials. Congratulations!

• Paper by Chi and Yingying (in collaboration with Prof. Choi's group at PSU) has been published on the Journal of Applied Physics. Well done!

Sept 2022

• Welcome new group members: Yun Kim and Xiaotian Xu!

MNTTL members enjoyed the a group visit to the NorthShore along the lake of Superior (link to gallery). It was relaxing and recharging! Now everyone is ready for the new semester!

MNTTL received a capital equipment grant. We will soon have violet/blue light in the lab!

Aug 2022

• Paper on "Radiative Cooling Photonic Structure" has been accepted by Advanced Materials Interfaces. Congrats!

• Paper on "Sustainability for Semiconductors" will be published in Issues in Science and Technology. This is a joint effort resulting from the MN Futures Award! Read more: "Researching ways to repair and recycle chips and related components can result in designs that avoid dependence on foreign suppliers or scarce resources, increasing the security of domestic supply chains."

July 2022

• MNTTL received a Seed grant to study Energy Efficient Spintronic Materials. Congratulations!

• MNTTL received a grant from NSF to study thermal transport and magnetization dynamics in Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) materials. This project will be in collaboration with Seagate to advance the HAMR technology. Congrats to all! 

June 2022

• Dingbin presented his poster on "Magnetization Dynamics of Spintronic Materials Enabled by Ultrafast Optical Metrology" at the SpinCal-XI meeting.

• Dr. Wang attended the Telluride conference and enjoyed hiking with colleagues.

• Dingbin won the 2022-2023 Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from the Graduate school. The fellowship supports his Ph.D. study for one academic year and provides a travel grant for him to present his work at a conference. Congratulations, Dingbin!

MRS poster

• Dingbin, Yingying, Chi, and Dr. Wang attended the MRS conference in Boston. Dingbin presented his work on "temperature-dependent damping of L10-FePd thin films". Yingying gave a poster presentation on "Thickness-dependent thermal conductivity of single-crystal beta-Ga2O3 thin films". Dr. Wang delivered an invited talk on magnetization dynamics.

• Yingying's poster at MRS has been selected to win a “Best Student Poster Award". Congratulations, Yingying!!

November 2021

August 2021

• Two papers by Yingying (in collaboration with Prof. Choi's group at PSU) have been published on ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. Both papers talk about beta-gallium oxide based materials as promising building blocks for high-power and high-voltage electronic devices. Congrats, Yingying!!

• Dingbin did a great job for his invited talk at the 32nd Magnetic Recording Conference. He shared his recent study of "Nobel Metal Underlayer Influence on the Temperature Dependent Gilbert Damping in L10 FePd Films with Large Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy", which is a collaborative work between the U of M and NIST.

June 2021

• Farewell lunch for Matt at Aster, followed by a nice walk with rainbow ice cream along the Stone Arch Bridge!

• Matt's paper (in collaboration with 3M) was published on Applied Physics Letters and featured as Editor's Pick. An AIP Scilight article highlights the significance of our work on "studying the thermal conductivity of industrial microscale filler materials for thermal composites". Congratulations!!

• Paper by Dingbin and Dustin, entitled "Damping and High Thermal Stability of Ru-seeded L10-Phase FePd Perpendicular Magnetic Thin Films", has been published on Applied Physics Letters and promoted as a Featured Article by the editor. Congratulations!

• The group had a great time and truly enjoyed staying in the cabin near the Kabekona lake (link to gallery).

July 2020

• Paper by Xuewang, Yingying, and Dingbin, entitled "Thermal Transport in ZnO Nanocrystal Networks Synthesized by Nonthermal Plasmas", is accepted by Physical Review Materials. Congratulations!

• Paper by Dustin and Jie (co-first authors) in collaboration with Prof. J-P Wang and Prof. Randall Victora at ECE has been accepted by Science Advances. This paper explores the possibility of manipulating spin using strain-spin coupling (magnetoacoustic resonance) at ultra-high frequencies (~60 GHz). Congrats!

• Xuewang and Dustin presented their work on thermal transport in nanocomposites and Brillouin Scattering in black phosphorus at the 20th Symposium on Thermophysical Properties in Boulder.

• Yingying presented her work on MD simulation of thermal interfaces at the Electronic Materials Conference at UCSB.

• Dustin and Dr. Wang attended the Spin Caloritronics Conference at OSU. Dr. Wang gave an invited talk and Dustin presented a poster on the group’s work of studying the damping of PMA thin films.

• Xuewang and Dr. Wang attend the 3M Science and Engineering Faculty Day.

• Dr. Wang presented our collaborative work with the Koester group at the CSW. She also enjoyed meeting with old friends in the NanoEngineering group at MIT.

• MNTTL group welcome REU students Johanna Jernberg and Carlex Morales-Cruz. They will spend the next 10 weeks at MNTTL learning thermal properties of oxides and making 3D printed holders for magnetic measurements.

May 2018

• Dr. Wang has been elected as a member of the Scientific Council of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT). Thank Prof. Simon for the nomination!

• Our paper entitled "A Modified Theoretical Model to Accurately Account for Interfacial Roughness in Predicting the Interfacial Thermal Conductance", in collaboration with Prof. Nuo Yang at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, has been accepted by "Frontiers in Energy Research, section Nanoenergy Technologies and Materials". Congratulations to Yingying!

• Xuewang, Dustin, and Yingying presented posters during the NSF-MRSEC site visit. Dr. Wang presented our group's MRSEC Seed project.

April 2018

• Dr. Wang gave a seminar in the School of Physics and Astronomy, entitled "Investigations of Spin Precession in Perpendicular Magnetic Materials Enabled by Time-Resolved Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect".

• Xuewang gave a presentation for his DDF fellowship in the Doctoral Research Showcase, entitled "Thermal Management and Solid-State Energy Conversion Enabled by Micro/Nanostructured Materials".

• Our paper entitled "The Roles of Point Defects in the Thermal Transport in Perovskite Barium Stannate", in collaboration with Prof. Chen at Xi'an Jiaotong University and Prof. Jalan at University of Minnesota, has been accepted by "The Journal of Physical Chemistry". Congratulations to Yingying!

March 2018

• Dr. Wang gave an invited talk at the APS March Meeting, entitled “Investigations of Spin Precession in Perpendicular Magnetic Materials Enabled by Time-Resolved Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect”.

• Dr. Wang gave an invited talk at the ASTC meeting in CA to report our group’s efforts on measuring the spin precession of recording media.

• Dr. Wang received the 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award. Accordingly, she gave an invited talk at 3M reporting our group’s efforts on thermal studies of functional materials for energy conversion and harvesting.

• Dr. Wang delivered an invited talk at the Magnetics seminar.

January 2018

• Welcome new group members Bill (Physics, co-advised with Prof. Paul Crowell) and Lis (Physics, co-advised with Prof. James Kakalios).

December 2017

• Our paper regarding the thermal properties of perovskite oxide La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ was featured as the cover art on Advanced Functional Materials. Congratulations Xuewang!

November 2017

• Our group member Xuewang Wu attended the IMECE 2017 conference in Tampa, FL, for giving an oral presentation titled “Structure-Thermal Property Correlation of Aligned Silicon Dioxide Nanorod Arrays” and a poster presentation titled “Glass-like Thermal Conductivity Induced by Oxygen Vacancies in Nanoscale Epitaxial La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ”.

• Ms. Yinging Zhang passed her PhD qualification exam on the first try. Congratulations!

• Dr. Wang attended the Materials Initiative Working Meeting on “Materials for Extreme Environments and Additive/Advanced Manufacturing for Energy Applications” hosted by CAES at Boise State U. Thanks Prof. Estrada for the invitation.

• Prof. Wang became a graduate faculty member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

• Our group became a member of MRSEC, which enables us to conduct collaborative research on thermal transport in nanoparticle colloidal system.

• Our group received a grant from IonE, which enables us to do our part in solar energy and waste heat recovery research. 

March 2017

• Our paper entitled "The Ultrafast Laser Pump-Probe Technique for Thermal Characterization of Materials with Micro/nanostructures" has been accepted by "Nanoscale and Microscale Thermophysical Engineering". Congratulations to all group members!
